Don Key, CPL, is a Senior Staff Landman for Continental Resources in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Before joining Continental in 2013, he was the Land Manager of Hanna Oil and Gas Company in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Prior work experience also includes TXO Production. Key played football on scholarship at the University of Oklahoma until injury and cancer ended his career in 1981. Following the injury, Coach Barry Switzer established the Don Key Award, which is presented annually at the last home game in Norman, Oklahoma. In addition, two OU benefactors initiated the Don Key Scholarship, which is given annually to an OU student athlete pursuing higher education. In 2006, Bill Hanna established the Don Key Leadership Scholarship in OU’s Energy Management Program. After earning his degree in petroleum land management from OU in 1983, Key joined AAPL in 1984 and received his CPL designation in 1991. Key served on the AAPL board at various times and on numerous committees, including treasurer, ethics chairman and annual meeting chairman and fundraiser. He currently serves as AAPL’s president. Key received AAPL’s 1994 Best Director’s Communication Award and the 1999 Landman of the Year award. An active member of the Fort Smith Association of Professional Landmen since 1984, Key has served in all offices, including president. He also served on the board of the Arkansas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners and has been active with United Way’s Corporate Team, Allocations Panel and as a senior loaned executive. He and wife Cindy have been married for 25 years and are the proud parents of Madeline and Jonathan Key.
